Reading through Genesis 15 & 16 today; it suddenly struck me how outlandish and sinful Sarai and Abram were in this premeditated act of faithless sin toward God.
“Abram’s wife Sarai had not borne him children. She owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. Sarai said to Abram, “Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps I can have children by her.” And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant.”
This is worse than it sounds, we can only vaguely understand the twisted nature of this by reading about it. But watch what happens next . . .
“The LORD came to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him.”
Sarai & Abram now called Sarah & Abraham, are still blessed by God!? Yes, and not just blessed, but they are blessed in a miraculous way. Why? Because in Genesis 12 God promised to bless this family, and the blessing was not based on their merit or worth but it was founded on The Goodness of God & God’s desire to create a people for Himself.
“Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.”
Notice that God says, “I will make . . .” “I will show you . . .” It’s always about God!’ It’s always about God being far better to all of us than we could ever deserve. Repent, worship God and live your life as faithfully as you can; but remember it’s all about God’s Grace and not our good works.
